(JONES, OWEN) TENNYSON, Alfred. A WELCOME TO HER ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCESS OF WALES.
(London): Day & Son, 1863. Small folio. Original red cloth, bevelled edges, all edges gilt. 8 chromolithographic leaves in colors and gold. [McClean, Victorian Book Design, p. 132].
This is Owen Jones' tribute to the Princess of Denmark who came over to marry, Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1863. A Welcome to Alexandra consists of eight leaves, chromolithographed on one side only by Day & Son, illuminating a poem by the poet Laureate, Alfred Tennyson; and although the lettering, partly in uncial style, with 'runic' interlacing is in its details most elaborate printed in ten colors, the general effect is of youth and gaiety and makes it the most charming of all Owen Jones' illuminated books. It sold at 21 shillings in an exotic cloth binding of red, gold and white, the 'Danish colors.' Extremities a little rubbed, else very good.
