(BOOK DESIGN) STANESBY, Samuel. LIGHT FOR THE PATH OF LIFE.
London: Griffith & Farran, (circa 1858). 8vo. Publishers green cloth, bevelled edges, all edges gilt. 16 leaves of cards, chromolithographically printed.
Scarce item with only four copies recorded on OCLC in American libraries. The printers Ashbee and Dangerfield excelled with this Stanesby designed anthology of Christian words - a superb copy of a fine example of Victorian Gothic revival book design. The binding is a variant to that illustrated in King's Victorian Decorated Trade Bindings, No. 674, plate lxxxv. Our copy is in a different binding, slightly more elaborate with a central mandorla having and with the title onlayed on cream paper; the spine remains the same in both variants. Gutta percha bound. Remarkably clean and fresh with minimal rubbing.
