GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE...FOR THE YEAR MDCCLIII.
London: Edward Cave, 1753. 8vo. Contemporary full-calf. (iv), Frontispiece, (iv), 626, (22) pages, 30 engraved plates, which includes 7 hand colored and 5 folding of which 3 are maps. First edition.
With thirty full-page prints and maps. They include Scull & Heap map of Philadelphia and adjacent parts; and a map of roads at southern end of Westminster Bridge, London. Volume XXXIII has a number of Virginia connections. First, there are eight prints after Catesby--six hand-colored. The Catesby plates include: 1. Baltimore Bird in Virginia in Tulip Tree (colored); 2. Purple Gross Beak in Poison Wood; 3. Black Fly Catcher in Yellow Virginia Jasmine (colored); 4. Little Trusher in Holly; 5. Little Lark in Yellow Star Flower (colored); 6. Virginia Stuartia (colored); 7. Red Bird in Hickory (colored); 8. Rattle Snake (colored). There is also another bird plate by Edwards. There are many interesting articles including a letter from John Mitchell to Catesby describing the little yellow star flower sent to him from Virginia in May 1742; an account of the Philadelphia Academy; a geographical description of Louisiana; a letter from Dr. John Lining of Charleston, South Carolina; and a plate of St. Philip's Church in Charleston, South Carolina; as well as the "method of taking impressions from a copper plate on Paris plaister with colours." Some wear to extremities of spine and hinges; edges and tips rubbed, still a desirable copy for its Catesby plates.
