(ILLUMINATION) THE CHRISTIAN YEAR.
Oxford: John Henry Parker, 1849. 8vo. Full-leather gilt binding with gauffered edges. viii, 360 pages.
This handsome book features ninety borders in colors and gold, a celtic cross as well as a tipped-in presentation note by the illuminator: "April 28, 1858, to E.T.D. Jones by his friend and pastor, W.L.O." The presentation note and celtic cross are both in gold and colors. The edges have a gauffered maxim: "In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength," surrounded by ornate gilt ornaments. The binding is by Simms, Bath, one of that city's earliest bookbinding firms, a predecessor to the more famous Bayntum of Bath. A fine example of mid-nineteenth century book arts.
