(WALLPAPER BINDING) Eighteenth Century American Exercise Book.
Andover, Pennsylvania: T. Howell, 1772. Folio. Wallpaper wrappers. (96) leaves.
This exercise book is bound in eighteenth-century patterned wallpaper which has the residue of glue on the back, indicating that this was a scrap or previously used paper. This manuscript book itself was written by a Timothy Howell of Andover, Pennsylvania, and is dated 1772. While nineteenth century school exercise books are fairly common, eighteenth century examples are very scarce. In addition to the solving of mostly mathematical problems, Howell has written quotes and other phrases, inked in a complex calligraphic style. While the wallpaper covers show some wear, they are still bright and are excellent examples of a wallpaper printed in oil based inks. The book is 13 x 8 1/2 inches, making the open wallpaper cover 13 x 17 inches.
