Key Book in Ornamental Design

DRESSER, Christopher.  PRINCIPLES OF DECORATIVE DESIGN.

London: Cassell, Petter & Galpin, (circa 1875). 4to. Publisher's cloth. viii, 167, (1), 8 pages, 2 chromolithographic plates. Fourth edition.

Following Ruskin's theory that ornamentation should be based on plant life and nature, Dresser stylizes natural design for ornamentation, color, furniture, architectural decorations, carpets, fabrics, stained glass, and other items.  Dresser was a trained biologist before becomming an artist.  In addition to the two magnificent chromolithographic plates, there are 183 illustrations in the text, including one of Dresser's famous geometric teapot.  Bound in is an eight page catalogue of Cassell books.  Very good.
