DAY, Lewis F. INSTANCES OF ACCESSORY ART, ORIGINAL DESIGNS AND SUGGESTIVE EXAMPLES OF ORNAMENT WITH PRACTICAL AND CRITICAL NOTES.
London: Batsford, 1880. Folio. Publisher's decorated cloth. Title leaf, 1 introductory leaf, and 30 photolithographic plates, each with leaf of letterpress text. First edition.
First edition of the author's first book. Lewis F. Day (1845-1910) was a noted designer who worked initially in stained-glass. He was a founding member of the Art Worker's Guild in 1884 and also of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1888. His first pattern book shows him to have been an eclectic with a particular passion for Japan. The plates in this book are in various styles with several labeled "Japanese." However, many of the other plates exhibit a clear influence of Japonism. All copies are scarce, but our copy which is in its original decorated binding in very good condition, is especially scarce. Owner's signature on front blank leaf; some minor foxing, else very good.
