BURNET, Gilbert.  THE HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. Two volumes.

London: T.H. and Richard Chiswell, 1681-1683. Folio. Contemporary full-calf. Frontispiece, (xviii), 377, 368, ( 4) pages, 4 engraved plates; Frontispiece, (xxv), 421, (8), 416, (4) pages, 7 engraved plates. Second edition.

Burnet's work was the primary Tory interpretation of the English reformation and the Church of England.  He compiled the definitive history complete with appendices of the relevant historical documents.  His work went through several popular editions, and among the major Virginia libraries to own copies were those of Thomas Jefferson, William Byrd, John Mercer, and Robert Carter.  Includes eleven finely engraved portrait plates of the major players in the events, including King Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey, Queen Mary I, Cardinal Wolsey, Archbishop Thomas Cramner, and Queen Elizabeth.  Hinges strengthened and bindings repaired.  Internally, very good.
