THE COMPLETE ENGLISH TRADESMAN, IN FAMILIAR LETTERS

6.   DEFOE, Daniel.  THE COMPLETE ENGLISH TRADESMAN, IN FAMILIAR LETTERS.  Two volumes, complete.

London: Charles Rivington, 1727-32. 8vo. Later quarter-calf, marbled boards. xvi, (iv), 368, 148; xiv, 298, 176 pages. Second edition.

First published in 1726, The Complete English Tradesman was a major later work, a rare example of his practical writings on commercial topics.  This second edition is greatly expanded.  Written for the apprentice and young tradesman, "directing him in all several parts and progressions of Trade, from his first entering upon business, to his leaving off.  Particularly with regard to diligence, over-trading, diversions, expensive living, surtyship, early marrying, compositions, partnerdhip,..."  He treats such subjects as "cautions against over-trading," "of the customary frauds of trade, and particularly of trading lies," and "of the dignity and honour of trade in England."  One of Defoe's most substantial works on the practical side of commercial life.  Very good.
