ROBINSON, W. THE ENGLISH FLOWER GARDEN, STYLE, POSITION, & ARRANGEMENT.
London: John Murray, 1893. 8vo. Cloth. xxii, 751 pages. Third edition.
The first edition of 1883 was only 332 pages. This vastly expanded third edition is 751 pages, and includes many flowering shrubs and flowering trees omitted in the first edition. Copiously illustrated with both photographs and engravings. A bright, fresh copy of an important work by the proprietor and gardener of Gravetye Manor who was an influence on Gertrude Jekyll and other proven gardeners of the early twentieth century. Robinson's ideas about wild gardening spurred the movement that evolved into the English cottage garden, a parallel to the search for honest simplicity and vernacular style of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Very good.
