TAYLOR, John. ALL THE WORKS OF JOHN TAYLOR, THE WATER POET.
London: Printed by J.B. for James Boler, 1630. Folio. Later blind-stamped, full calf. (xii), 148, (2), 343, (1), 146 pages. First edition. [Pforzheimer, 1006].
A collection of sixty-three works by John Taylor (1578-1653), who referred to himself as the water poet because of his primary occupation as a waterman on the Thames and his earlier naval service. The book has an engraved architectural title page by Thomas Cockson showing Taylor surrounded by nautical instruments and entertaining a passenger. There are also twenty-five full portrait woodcuts of English monarchs, over 150 woodcut heads of notables, as well as other illustrations, tail and head pieces, throughout the text. Many of the works printed here did not survive in their earlier separate forms. This is a very clean copy, uncommon thus. The work was printed by four separate printers and there are a number of pages misnumbered, all detailed in the Pforzheimer catalogue. All the numbers listed there correspond with the page numbers in our copy.
