A Group of Seven Menus

(MENUS)  REDON, Georges.  A GROUP OF SEVEN MENUS.

Paris: 1917-1919. 7 menus (16 x 11 1/2 inches). First editions.

Each menu of this series features a full-page drawing by Georges Redon (1869-1943) mostly with a World War I theme.  The menus were published for four of the leading Paris restaurants: Cafe de Paris, Prè Catelan, Armenonville, and Fouquet's Bar.  The verso has a border printed in light green and the eight course dinner, priced ala-carte, is hand-written for each day and duplicated by some sort of Gestetner-like process.  The thick paper is brittle and there are a few tears and chips along the margins, but in general a delightful series.  Several of Redon's images were later used to illustrate Redon's book, Aux Enfants qui Secont la France, which stressed the sacrifices and patriotism of French parents during the Great War.
