THE CARPENTER'S ASSISTANT

BROWN, William. THE CARPENTER'S ASSISTANT: CONTAINING A SUCCINCT ACCOUNT OF EGYPTIAN, GRECIAN AND ROMAN ARCHITECTURE together with SPECIFICATIONS, PRACTICAL RULES AND TABLES FOR CARPENTERS, AND A GLOSSARY OF ARCHITECTURAL TERMS.

Boston: Edward Livermore, 1854, 1854. 4to. Contemporary full-sheep. Frontispiece, 148 pages, 75 plates. Sixth edition. [Hitchcock, 219].
First published in 1848, Brown's work went through many editions with this one labeled as the "Twentieth Thousand." It was "revised and enlarged, with additions on Rural Architecture," by Lewis E. Joy. The additions on rural architecture include Gothic and Tudor cottages and Elizabethan and Italian villas. The text has "specifications, practical rules, tables for carpenters, and a glossary of architectural terms, illustrated with nearly 200 plates of plans, elevations, details, and practical stair-building." In addition to the plates, there are numerous illustrations in the text. One of the few works which is both a builder's guide and house pattern book, and the only architectural book we know of which is illustrated with copper engravings, wood engravings and lithography. Moderate foxing; contemporary full sheep binding rubbed on hinges, else very good.
