COTTAGE AND CONSTRUCTIVE ARCHITECTURE

BICKNELL, A.J.  DETAIL, COTTAGE AND CONSTRUCTIVE ARCHITECTURE.

New York: A.J. Bicknell, 1873. Folio. Publisher's cloth. Frontispiece, (iv) pages, 75 plates, 5 pages of advertisements, 1 of which is in color. First edition. [Hitchcock, 164.]

A surprisingly rare book, Bicknell includes designs for shop fronts, not found in many American pattern books at the time.  The plates include signed designs by H. Hudson Holly, D.T. Atwood, and many others.  Bicknell includes measured drawings, perspective drawings, elevations, and plans for summerhouses, villas, seaside cottages, etc.  There are illustrations for cornices, bracket windows, window caps, doors, piazzas, chimney tops, cornices, fences, stairs, and more.  The chromolithographic ad at the end is for Minton tiles.  Measured drawings of details are found throughout.  Endpapers creased and some cover wear but a nice copy, nevertheless.
