WHITEFIELD, Edwin. THE HOMES OF OUR FOREFATHERS....RHODE ISLAND AND CONNECTICUT.
Boston: Whitefield and Crocker, 1882. 4to. Publisher's dark green cloth, all edges gilt. (viii) pages, 28 chromolithographic plates. First edition.
Edwin Whitefield created a series of architectural books, The Homes of our Forefathers, which showed eighteenth century (and earlier) houses in Massachusetts and other areas in New England. The preface in each volume set the reason for Whitefield publishing them: "The object of this book is to preserve and hand down to all future generations representations of the Homes of their Forefathers. From a variety of causes they are rapidly disappearing; and before long the places that now know them will know them no more." The books featured color-tinted lithographs created from "original drawings made on the spot" by Whitefield. The Rhode Island and Connecticut book was the second in the series. A very good, bright copy of a scarce American architecture book.
