LE ROY, Jacques. LOGES DU VATICAN, VUE PERSPECTIVE DES LOGES.
Paris: Francois Jombert, 1787. Folio (22 x 16 1/2 inches).14 plates on 8 sheets.
Rare set of engraved plates with only one set recorded on OCLC-at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Jacques le Roy engraved this set of plates from drawings provided by Pierre Philippe Choffard. They represent the architecture and interior decorations to the Loges (loggias) of the Vatican. Pope Julius II commissioned Bramante to rebuild the eastern facade of the Apostolic Palace by building loges. After Bramante's death in 1514, Raphael succeeded him, and the Loges were designed and executed under his supervision from 1518 to his death in 1520. This is a gallery of thirteen bays whose delicate, lavish decoration, executed in particular by Giovanni da Udine (1487-1564), combines painted grotesques and sculpted stucco, while leaving room for some small compositions in fresco, four per bay, that illustrate the principal episodes of the Old Testament in a lively, concise manner. Very good.
