BLAND, Humphrey. A TREATISE OF MILITARY DISCIPLINE.
London: R. Baldwin, and others, 1759. 8vo. Contemporary full-calf. (xxxii), 418 pages, 7 folding plates. Eighth edition.
First published in 1727 and greatly expanded in this edition, Bland's Treatise was considered the definitive military manual in the eighteenth century--"in which is laid down and explained the duty of the officer and soldier." It was part of the libraries of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, both colonels in their local militia units. The Royal Governor of New Jersey, John Montgomery, and the last royal governor of North Carolina, William Tryon, also owned copies, and it was listed in the University of Virginia's 1828 library catalogue. Name in ink on title page. Minor chipping to extremities of spine, else a very good, crisp copy.
