THE TOILET

(GRIMALDI, William and Stacey).  THE TOILET.

London: The Author, 1821. 12mo. Contemporary printed boards. (xiv) pages, 9 hand-colored plates, each with leaf of text. Second edition.

An attractive copy of this delightful movable book, designed to instill feminine virtues in young ladies.  First devised by the miniature painter William Grimaldi as a house party amusement in 1821, his son Stacey Grimaldi seized on his father's drawings of his sister's dressing table and suggested that with the addition of moralizing verses the drawings would make a good book.  Accordingly The Toilet was issued at the author's own expense in 1821. Sympathetically rebacked with a contemporary inscription "Amelia Waddell. The Gift of Her dear Mamma,"  and the red leather bookplate of Henry Arthur Hannen, a practicing Barrister-at-Law at The Hall, West Farleigh, Kent.
