(WOMEN CONNOISSEURS) CATALOGUE OF EXHIBITS. LADIES LOAN EXHIBITION, TOWANDA, PA. FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, IN MERCUR HALL.
(Towanda, PA: Bradford Reporter Print, 1883). 8vo. Publisher's printed wrappers. 18, (11) pages, First edition.
Rare pamphlet not recorded on OCLC. Such exhibitions evidently enjoyed a small vogue in the 1870s and 188os. This catalogue is a fascinating glimpse at the collecting habits of women in the late nineteenth century and something of an amateur cabinet of curiosities, some 724 items well calculated to make up a pleasant week's exhibition in a Towanda, PA hall. Includes such attractions as a specimen of the handwriting of John Quincy Adams, three volumes of poems owned by Edmund Burke, a bronze casting taken from a temple in China in 1854 "and claimed to be very old," "Curious money," etc. Each contributor is listed with the item they are loaning to the exhibit. With eleven pages of advertisements of local Towanda businesses in back. Original light violet wrappers sunned along the edges and some minor chipping, else very good.
