(TRADE CHRISTMAS CARD) CROCKER, H.S. & CO. Christmas Card.
San Francisco: Crocker & Co., 1886. Chromolithographic Card (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches).
Company promotional color Christmas card for H.S. Crocker & Co. Founded in 1856 in Sacramento "H.S. Crocker Company Printers" established its first printing and lithography plant in 1871 in San Francisco by the Golden Gate. In 1885, Crocker erected a five-story plant, considered to be the finest commercial printing establishment in the West. The early Christmas card shows a very dour young woman toboganning down a most precipitious slope. She is wearing a red dress and has a fur rug in her lap and a large shawl streaming behind emblazoned "Merry Christmas." A winged cherub in winter dress and snowshoes holds a piece of paper reading "1886" in his right hand, while his left hand is placed rather familiarly on her right shoulder and he is learing quite unblushingly at her. She heeds him not, for she is staring straight ahead and clutching a hand break in each hand. Very good.
