(BAILLIE SCOTT) WHITE, John P. FURNITURE MADE AT THE PYGHTLE WORKS, BEDFORD.
London: Bemrose & Sons, 1901. 4to. Later half-morocco, marbled papered boards, original printed wrappers mounted and bound in. 39 pages including 73 text illustrations, plus 8 colored plates. First edition.
Rare furniture trade catalogue with only three copies listed on OCLC in American libraries. Baillie Scott trained as an architect but as early as 1897 was commissioned, together with C.R. Ashbee, to provide decorations and furniture for the Grand Ducal Palace at Darmstadt. In 1901 he moved to Bedford, possibly to be in easy reach of J.P. White, the furniture manufacturer for whom he had been making designs since 1898. By 1901 White was able to issue a catalogue of furniture by Baillie Scott which numbered about 120 pieces. These were made at the Pyghtle Works and sold through Liberty's as well as White's own showrooms on New Bond Street. This catalogue illustrates in sharp clear halftones a wide range of arts and crafts furniture and includes eight color plates. This catalogue is an important historic record as "the White Firm which was in business until 1960, has destroyed its early catalogue records" (J.D. Kornwolf. Baillie Scott, p. 33). Very good.
